A Few Recent Awesome Eats

Here are a few awesome eats that I have enjoyed both at home and around town lately. I think I’ve found a contender for the best every sweet potato fries! Chris and I went to Corbett and Claude before seeing a movie a few weeks ago and I ordered a salad and a side of sweet potato fries. They were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and dusted with chipotle. I will be back for more very soon! Sometimes I get cravings for very particular combinations of foods. At lunchtime last week all I really wanted was some kale slaw mix, a whole bunch of chickpeas, some feta and avocado, and pumpkin seeds for crunch, all dressed with aioli. So, I made that combination happen. When you trust your body to tell you what it needs, and satisfy your hungers appropriately (whether they be for kale slaw or cake), a whole new world awakens. Last Saturday morning I started my day with a walk with my friend Jenny. We met at the Storey Bridge and walked along the bottom of the Kangaroo Point cliffs and then through Southbank and back again. After our long walk we were super hungry so we stopped for breakfast at the Puk Collective, which is a cute little art gallery, cafe and pop-up event space. There were so many yummy options on the menu – who doesn’t love all day breakfast! I went for the Corn Fritters with Smashed Avocado and Feta and an iced latte. It was a savoury breakfast dream.  Probably my favourite awesome eat lately was the ice cream cake we had at my sister’s birthday party (happy birthday again Jess!). It was a cookie base, with caramel, cookie dough, and cookies and cream ice cream layers. It was a monster, and the perfectly sweet way to celebrate a sweet soul. And you can never go wrong with the nostalgia stirred up by a sprinkle-topped ice cream cake!

In my non-diet world there is room for salad and chips, ice cream cake and vegetable fritters. When you walk away from restrictive eating plans and trying to control your food you make room for all foods and the ability to enjoy eating whatever you are truly hungry for. Sure when you first start you might be all about ice cream, but after a while when you stay tuned into your hunger and appetite you realise that you don’t want all ice cream all the time. Sometimes you want salad, sometimes you want sushi, sometimes you want sweet potato fries, and yes, sometimes you want ice cream. And all of those foods are okay. All of those foods are part of a healthy diet. All foods fit. So tell me, what is something AWESOME you have eaten lately!
